Getting of Wisdom, The (1978)
A competently made period piece.
Lady in the Van, The (2015)
Perhaps a touch too long but a combination of Alan Bennett's material and Maggie Smith's performance is hard to resist. Alex Jennings is very good and there is support from a quality troupe of character actors.
Sleeping Beauty (2011)
Well done to Emily Browning for undertaking a risky and vulnerable role. She succeeds in delivering with aplomb as does Rachael Blake as the classy pimp.
Three Summers (Três Verões) (2019)
It has a political edge, and although not great, it is always watchable thanks to an energetic anchoring performance from Regina Casé.
Up The Yangtze (2007)
Although there are some stunning shots of The River – the opening scene of the vessel moving through the lock is memorable – the story belongs to the Peasants who are being relocated from their soon to be flooded homes.
Agora (2009)
It has some worthy scenes, mainly those that contain intelligent discussion, but for too much time the screenplay prefers to concentrate on religious bigotry and the bloodshed that often goes with it.
Hong Kong 1941 (Dang doi lai ming) (1983)
There are some good visuals but the story of Hong Kong during this period deserves to be told through documentary rather than drama.
Yogi Bear (2010)
There is good interaction between the human and bear characters. Cavanagh and Faris are good casting choices and also interact well.
Love and Other Impossible Pursuits (The Other Woman) (2009)
The title is not too bad.
Egyptian, The (1954)
As expected Peter Ustinov appears and is the best part of this along with the set designs.
