Baby’s Film Reviews
About me: A film is like a glass of wine, always a stimulant yet some more full bodied than others...
29 Films have been rated or reviewed by Baby.
- Sherlock Holmes (2009)
- Had my hopes for something a little more scarily mystical (in true Sherlock form) but they opted for the family fun version and hey, it certainly entertains.
- Shutter Island (2010)
- After watching it the film just gets better and better in my head. A rare experience looking back like that and aside from great viewing that's a valid reason why to watch.
- Road, The (2009)
- A very tragic look to the future but this film is just so good. The dirty grade and the brilliant performances from Viggo and Kodi leaves you checking for grit under your fingernails. MUST SEE
- Amelie (2001)
- Beautiful from head to toe (oh you too Audrey!). In story, cinematography, performances you name it, a complete cinematic experience. MUST SEE
- DVD $14.95
- Once Were Warriors (1994)
- Brutal but well constructed. Understandable as to it being the breakthrough for the Director and the two male leads. In saying this Rena Owen is equally as good. MUST SEE
- DVD
$19.95 $14.95
- Scarfies (1999)
- Story was too weak but the cast almost manage to make it work. One of those hangover type films where your brain can be left in your pocket to watch.
- World's Fastest Indian, The (2005)
- A true story for all ages. Very unlikely hero with determination and passion that fills you with inspiration and hope for your own dreams to come true. MUST SEE
- Tattooist, The (2007)
- O deary deary me.. should've done my washing instead.
- Rain of the Children (2007)
- I think my favourite Ward film yet. Some people don't like his on camera approach but to me it was sincere and a story obviously close to his heart.
- Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls (2009)
- Comical and Political but full of sincerity.
Loved the historical footage and plenty of giggle moments (especially over the 80's hair do's)
- DVD
$24.95 $18.70
- I'm Not Harry Jenson (2009)
- With limited budget this cast and crew have managed to pull off a suspenseful entertaining film. Well done to all
- Boy (2010)
- Is this film called "Boy" or "Dad"? Title suggests story to centre around the kid but perhaps someone got sidetracked.. At parts amusing but ultimately sad that the depth of this troubled family runs only ankle high.
Little bro Rocky stole the show.
- Hours, The (2002)
- Profoundly moving. One to prep for – don't watch before a social event or you'll be the boring one looking woeful in the corner. STILL A MUST SEE (just at the right time ok)
- Life Is Beautiful (La vita e bella) (1998)
- The first movie I've ever burst into tears when the end credits rolled. So beautifully told, a definite MUST SEE.
- Adaptation (2002)
- Charlie Kaufman I would like to win a trip to your brain. The world is a better place with you and your fruity stories in it.
Nicholas, Meryl and Chris – you can stay too, your performances were too good to comment. MUST SEE
- Highlander, The (1986)
- "There can be only one" – and there should've been only one... film that is. Watch this but leave the rest alone!!!
- Blues Brothers, The (1980)
- If you don't like musicals this is the one to change your mind.
I pity the fool who doesn't think this is too cool for school..
- Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)
- Very impressive and refreshingly different. I'd like my very own Hedwig.
- Triplets of Belleville, The (Belleville Rendezvous) (2003)
- The music is perfectly matched to this beautiful animation. So nice to see something other than Pixar and Walt D. Just cool in every way.
- Harold and Maude (1970)
- Fruity and borderline but sincere and sweet.
- Office, The (TV Series) (2002)
- One word. GENIUS
- DVD
$35 $26.25
- Secretary (2002)
- One of the few films that manages to cross the line of sick and make it sexy. Could've gone so wrong but clever direction and the right cast makes it wonderfully unique and a definite MUST SEE
- Blu-Ray $34.95
- Benny and Joon (1992)
- If there is a top ten rom com list this film should be on it. Fruity and original with hottie of the century Johnny Depp
- Leon The Professional, The (Professional, The) (1994)
- Total visual eye candy, the art direction is faultless. All elements at their finest especially the performance of ultimate bad guy Gary Oldman.
- Blu-Ray $49.95
- Dirty Dancing (1987)
- Romance and very good dancing. You either love it or you don't... Count me in please (but you can keep your Dirty Dancing 2)
- Black Gold (2006)
- One of those doco's that pulls on the morality strings of a total caffeine fiend such as myself.
- DVD
$19.95 $10
- Air Guitar Nation (2006)
- C–Diddy – I'll watch you jam any day.
- Young @ Heart (Young at Heart) (2007)
- Inspiring and very moving. Some of the lyrics bring new light having heard them through voices of those closer to death than me.
- DVD
$20 $15
- Big River Man (2009)
- Basic in approach but the subject himself is totally captivating and a perfect example of how we are not all cut from the same mould. Almost even more entertaining is his "trusty sidekick" – possibly another doco in the making..
MUST SEE
