Murder By Numbers (2002): Perfectly cast with Pitt and Gosling with a tinge of Rebel Without a Cause, not so much a "who dunnit" but a "will they get caught" and if so, what mistake did they make?
Operation Avalanche (2016): Not so impressively staged mock documentary... I guess I was hoping for something a bit more believable. Now we have "Alternative truth", I wanted to come away thinking "Yip, quite possible", instead I thought, "That was a bit silly"
Handsome Devil (2016): Sweet coming of age, rites of passage, I am what I am kind of stuff. Brilliant performance by Andrew Scott and some funny lines. "Heartwarming"rn
Greek Pete (2009): Frank and honest look at Pete who is a sex worker in London. Part documentary, part fiction, porn without the porn, drama without the drama. Didn't really reveal much that I hadn't already assume. Next.
Star Trek: Beyond (2016): An action movie set in space, a few characters that must be a make–up artists dream & actors nightmare. Usual story where the lead characters survive heroically and others don't. Some great comedy lines, not surprised that it was co–written by Simon Pegg; Blu-Ray ~~$20~~ $15
From Beginning to End (Do Começo ao Fim) (2009): Beautiful cinematography, waiting for something to happen and nothing did. Couldn't help but feel the movie was trying to say something, or that we should find it shocking, which it probably would have been had it been produced 30 years ago.
Eastern Boys (2013): Well executed movie exploring power dynamics, just the right amount of tension and inter–cultural unease.
Predestination (2014): Great sci–fi – a "predestination paradox", well executed and I wanted to watch it again once I knew the story.
Ex Machina (2015): A thought provoking film based on ideas not action scenes, what does it mean to be human?
Geography Club (2013): I'm beginning to think Americans are slow learners as these high–school students look mid 20s. The lead actors are 22 and 30, and can't pass for 17. That said though, it's a sweet, enjoyable coming–out story; Glee without the music.
Prayers for Bobby (2009): Over dramatised, heart–strings puller. Good story that needs to be told, but a bit preachy and preaching to the converted I suspect.
Humpday (2009): Real characters who find themselves in an awkward position (pardon the pun). Low budget, "Will they, won't they?", "Why, why not?" sharply observed farcical slice of life.; DVD $14.95
Private Romeo (2011): Style over substance. Starts off slow and then, well, doesn't really go anywhere. You know the story, but I wanted to stop watching it cause I simply didn't care what happened.
I Killed My Mother (J'ai tué ma mère) (2009): "chronic self–absorption" describes it really well, given that Dolan wrote, produced, directed and starred in it. Annoying!
Harvest (Stadt Land Fluss) (2011): Harvest is embedded with a slow and unfolding beauty that is mesmerising. It has an almost mystic quality that, despite being devoid of any grand climaxes, grabs you completely. rn
Happening, The (2008): The central idea is a good one, but it fails on all other counts; plot, execution, performance. It's eye–rollingly rubbish.
Elephant (2003): Beautiful and clever movie. I recongnise all of the characters from my high school. Not really a violent movie, the shooting is very matter of fact and emotionally detached, just like the games the young men play. Watch it more than once.
Summer Storm (Sommersturm) (2004): Gay teen angst, some tender moments, but a bit contrite with disjointed subplots.
Broken Hearts Club, The (2000): The story of a group of friends, love, betrayal, and moving on. Funny, sad, accomplished.
Trick (1999): Feel good movie, funny, romantic, smart. Watch out for Miss Coco Peru.
Time Crimes (Los Cronocrímenes Timecrimes) (2007): Brilliant movie, the age old paradox; can you go back in time to stop yourself from going back in time?rnrnIt\'s a watcher, getting more complex as the twists unfold.
A Home at the End of the World (2004): A story about wanting to belong, and how the definition of family has changed. It has it\'s flaws, but sit back and enjoy the ride. Great soundtrack.
For the Bible Tells Me So (2007): Well put together doco following the story of selected religious familes and how they coped with a homosexual in their midst. Honest, and raw at times.
Tan Lines (2006): Low budget movie punching above it\'s weight. An honest glimpse into young men, their fluid sexuality, peer pressure and small towns.
Redwoods (2009): Good plot, not executed that well though, \"Acting\" rather than heartfelt performances.
Walk Like A Man (2008): Interesting look at sexuality, gender and rugby.
C.R.A.Z.Y. (Crazy) (2004): This movie captures growing up as a gay teenager in the 1970s in a dysfunctional family. Colourful, funny, raw, entertaining, and a kick–arse, soundtrack
