Raw (Grave) (2016): I'm loving everything Julia Ducournau does.
Victor Frankenstein (2015): Felt more like television than cinema.
Night House, The (2020): The first two acts of this film were great! Genuinely scary moments, loved Rebecca Hall's take on grieving and giving no shits about anything. But it all kinda fell flat in the end. If you like a touch of romance with your ghost stories, check this out.
Like Stars on Earth (Taare Zameen Par) (2007): 155 minutes and yet I watched it all in one sitting. Beautiful film. Little bit of melodrama at times. The songs were great.
Cinemania (2002): Watching movies is anti–capitalist. No, this wasn't a movie this was a mirror.
Old Boy (Oldboy) (2004): No one told me this is a comedy! It's a little bit overhyped (where were all the twists?) but an enjoyable film nonetheless.
A Field in England (2013): I didn't understand a lick of this and I'm not sure subtitles would have helped.
Eyes Without a Face (Yeux sans visage, Les) (1960): Retains its eeriness 62 years later
Altered States (1980): Mind–bending body horror which unfortunately is starting to age. Had I watched this with friends there's no doubt we would have been laughing at the numerous campy moments. The special effects hold up well.
Surf Nazis Must Die (1986): Confusing and too long dispite only being 80 minutes. Had its moments. Best viewed with friends and drinks.
Following (1999): A good core story told in a very uncompelling way. Lacklustre performances, too harsh black and white. Though Christopher Nolan's trademark storytelling is evident.
Malignant (2021): Went in blind and loved every minute.
Little Monsters (2019): This was fun. Lovely performances from the child actors. Those that don't like kids may want to avoid.
And Soon the Darkness (1970): Sometimes less is more and this is one of those times. Overall very enjoyable film.
Blob, The (1988): Has everything you could want in a horror sci fi. The effects are great.
February (The Blackcoat's Daughter) (2015): Intriguing and dark character piece, I thoroughly enjoyed this.
Jacob's Ladder (1990): More like slow 90s drama than suspense
Dogtooth (Kynodontas) (2009): Idiosyncratic and uncomfortable viewing; DVD $29.95
Grey Gardens (1976): Gather up ur cats & watch this racoon–on–the–wall documentary. You'll see here: Faded old world glamour; Hampton hijinks; Ms Havisham in the Hamptons? Recommended foods 2 eat while watching: corn 4 dinner followed by ice cream.
Holy Motors (2012): Ah the rich and their follies.rnrnThis film made me very aware of myself as part of the film process. I was watching the film. The creators knew this and I could feel their gaze.
Summer 1993 (2017): Captivating and heart–warming. This film really captures the awkwardness and confusion of being a young child in a world made for adults.
Deerskin (Le Daim) (2019): Quietly erreverant
Worst Person in the World, The (2021): Was expecting some tragic & terrible antics but instead got a few mildly unpleasant people.; DVD $29.95
Rapture (1965): Beautiful film
Guy Maddin Collection, The (Twilight of the Ice Nymphs, The Heart of the World, Archangel) (1990-2000): Twilight of the Ice Nymphs: Delightfully bonkers.rnAnd my friend has this to say: rnIt's like someone put the tempest in a paper shredder, dropped acid then tried to put it back together
Nobody (2021): Over the top but never run of the mill
In the Mood for Love (2000): Beautiful film
Scream (2022)
Primer (2004): Very enjoyable, I especially liked the realism of the dialog
Get Out (2017): Many layers to this creepy and thought–provoking film
Belfast (2021): A happy and comforting film
Departures (2008): Lovely film
Mother! (mother!) (2017): This was a delight!
Kingdom Hospital (TV Mini-series) (2004): Not bad, it's quite different to the original, they have definitely made it their own in a way that works. Very entertaining and spooky.; DVD $34.95 | Blu-Ray $34.95
A Bit of Fry and Laurie (TV Series) (1986-1995): If you want to watch some British comedy, you really can't go wrong with this!
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The (TV Series) (2015): what a crack up. Occasionally heart–warming and irreverent, always hilarious.
Prisoner, The (TV Series) (1967-1968): Very watchable, entertaining show that culminates in a delightful ending.
Enemy (2013): Well worth it
Assassination Nation (2018): What did I just watch?
Keane (2004): A simple film but psychologically expansive
King of Staten Island, The (2020): I really loved this film. Funny and filled with love
Terrified (Aterrados) (2017): This was a fun horror. Very spooky and very thoughtful
It Comes at Night (2017): A thoughtful horror. Would recommend even to those uninterested in the genre.rnThis is more character based rather than plot based
Waves (2019): Wow
It Must Be Heaven (2019): a perfect film, this guy can do physical comedy.; DVD $29.95
Come to Daddy (2019): Went in blind which is the best way to watch a film like this. A well executed and fun ride. And as someone who is not a fan of toilet humour I was impressed with the small sample of tasteful toilet humour which appeared part way through.; DVD ~~$20~~ $15
Psycho Goreman (2020): Like Turbo Kid but turned up to 11. A lot of fun.
Twelve Angry Men (12 Angry Men) (1957): Very pleasing film. Juror number 3 should try DBT
London: The Modern Babylon (2012): Held my attention but don't really remember any of it.
They Came Back (Les Revenants) (2004): Fresh take
Water (2005): Beautiful.
Awakenings (1990): Saw this as a child and it has stuck with me ever since. Heart wrenching.; DVD ~~$24.95~~ $18.70
Babel (2006)
Arrival (2016): Pretty good sci–fi. Fresh take I haven't particularly seen before.
Ten, The (2007): Don't bother. Watch Wet Hot American Summer instead.; DVD $29.95
Zulu (1969): One of my ex's favourite films.; DVD ~~$19.95~~ $14.95
Fifth Element, The (1997): My ex loved this movie.rn"Multi–pass" – my ex, all the time.; DVD $19.95
Kedi (2016): Don't watch Cats, watch this instead
Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)
An American Werewolf in London (1981): Excellent sequel to An American Werewolf.rnAnd great soundtrack.
Invisible Man, The (2020): Great film. Very suspenseful and atmospheric. Great use of camera angles making the – woman alone in house – parts (where very little was actually happening) the scariest.
Capharnaum (2018): I loved this movie; DVD $29.95
Birdman (Birdman: or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014): What was this?
Amelie (2001): This whole film is a little wooden box filled with beautiful and quirky trinkets.; DVD ~~$19.95~~ $14.95
Antichrist (2009): Definitely left an impression. Enjoyed it back then, not sure how I'd feel about it now.
Six Feet Under - Season 1 (TV Series) (2001): One of my favourite TV shows ever
American Beauty (1999): A sad, beautiful and humorous film
Orlando (1992): I went in thinking I wouldn't much like this but actually it was amazing. Not a traditional story at all and definitely bends the rules of cinema.
Touching the Void (2003): Whatched at reading cinema with a friend, very gripping. We didn't bring jerseys however, and froze in the scenery and air conditioning
Only Lovers Left Alive (2013): You know what, I kinda didn't hate it. Normally vampires, which are the most killable creatures there are, spend a lot of time whining about how immortal they are.There wasn't any of that. And it was kinda enjoyable as a result.
Unleashed (Danny the Dog) (2005): I went into a preview screening not knowing anything about this except that Jet Li was in it. Wow. What a lovely action/comedy/drama. It's much more than the sum of its parts. Yes it's silly and actiony and violent but it also has a heart
Helvetica (2006): Who knew a film about a font could be so interesting, funny and vibrant.
Time Crimes (Los Cronocrímenes Timecrimes) (2007): Loved. This. Movie.
Triangle (2009): I didn't completely 'get' what was going on but as massive fan of 'fixed timeline' time travel movies, this was fantastic!
Cabin in the Woods, The (2011): Fun midnight movie. I look forward to watching this in 30 years to see how it has aged.
Room 237 (2012): I think I liked it.
Pop Skull (2009): Saw this at the director Q and A screening. Accidentally told Adam that his movie wasn't at all scary. *facepalm*
A Hijacking (2012): Not bad; DVD $19.95
Mood Indigo (2013): Didn't particularly like this one.
Dance of Reality, The (2013): You know I have seen so many films I can't quite remember if I've seen this or am just making it up. Eitherway, great film
Particle Fever (2013): Loved this movie. A science doco full of heart.
Locke (2013): Simple but complex. I was watching intently right to the end.; DVD $19.95
Congress, The (2013): This film stuck with me and had me reading the futurological congress by Stanislaw Lem, though they are very different stories. The movie is so much more.; DVD $19.95
Heart of a Dog (2015): I really liked this movie. Must reeatch it. Wednesday?
Tickled (2016): Wow. Really good film.
I, Daniel Blake (2016): This was surprisingly great.
Square, The (2017): I haven't seen this yet but my mum couldn't stop talking about it. Every time her friends brought up their nziff views she'd say "have you seen The Square?"rnWednesday maybe.; DVD $29.95
Columbus (2017): Saw this at film society. I liked it. The architecture is a character of sorts. This film reminds me so much of Liberal Arts but this one is more grown up.
I Am Not a Witch (2017): Really enjoyed this film.; DVD ~~$29.95~~ $19.95
Skate Kitchen (2017): Loved this movie! It's def aimed at millenials and younger audiences but that's ok. Really wanted to learn how to skate after seeing this!
Dilili in Paris (Dilili à Paris) (2018): Lovely delightful film.; DVD $29.95
Dear Zachary (A Letter to a Son about his Father) (2008): Amazing film. Pearce says it perfectly.
Three Identical Strangers (2018): Great film. Riveting. Best to go in knowing as little as possible.
Bait (2019): Very interesting film. I liked it. Saw it at lighthouse Cuba with my mum. It has an interesting filming style that at first seems odd but once it reveals its trick at the end, it makes sense.
Beautiful Boy (2018): Beautiful film. I read David's book last year and felt the movie captures a lot of the feel of the book. The cinematography and sound design really stood out for me. And I loved the house and front yard.
King of the Hill (1993): Very interesting film. Must rewatch it.
Jurassic Park (1993): The. Best. Film. Ever.
Reservoir Dogs (1992): My favourite Tarantino movie.; DVD ~~$19.95~~ $14.95
Waking Life (2001): This movie is rotoscoped so if you like animation this might put you off. Luckily it's dialog heavy, philosophical, thought–provoking and fun.
Office Space (1999): Very funny!
Jodorowsky's Dune (2014): Loved this movie!
Stoker (2013): Beautiful. Stayed with me for weeks
Wild (2015): Another film the hit me right in the feels.
Tracks (2013): Wow. This film was a punch right in my chest. I absolutely loved it but my god it hurt.
Hairspray (2007): I am a fan of the original and thought they did a fantastic remake.
Cry-Baby (Cry baby) (1990): Love it
Across the Universe (2007): Loved this movie. So much fun
Cherry Blossoms (2008): Loved this movie. Wednesday.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001): I wonder what this would have been like if directed by multiple people. If each chapter was a different directer. rnsometimes I feel like I'm the only person who liked this film.
Interstellar (2014): I loved this movie. Yes Tubbs is onto something here but sometimes you want to watch something a bit over the top. If you love romance and the love conquers all trope but also want to get into sci–fi then check this one out.
Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010): Amazing and inspiring
Running Scared (2006): This film hyped me up so much so that when the credits rolled I wanted to run a marathon.
Vigil (Incl. In Spring One Plants Alone & A State Of Seige) (1984): Beautiful and haunting. The landscape is just as much a character as the actors. Fiona Kay's performance was sensitive, moving and relatable
Prestige, The (2006): My favouritetist movie. Ever. 6 stars.
20th Century Women (2017): I thought this film was really beautiful. I watched it with my mum at the nziff. I loved Dorothea and found her self–determination quite empowering. My mum found her quite annoying.; DVD ~~$20~~ $15
Liberal Arts (2012): This film is great. It has some monumental and fleeting nuggets of ideas that resonated right through me
I Am Not Your Negro (2016): Amazing; DVD $24.95
Faces Places (2017): Funny, erreverent and enlightening. JR and Varda are a delight.rnThere are 2 things I love in cinema: children being empowered and communities coming together. This has the latter. The community spirit and the art inspired me.
Little Miss Sunshine (2006): This is the film that inspired me to read Proust. Never did but to hell with it, this film is great! Wednesday.
Brand Upon the Brain! (2006): Saw this at the nziff. I thought it was so amazing, I didn't ever want to see it again. Wednesday.
Florida Project, The (2017): Favourite film of the last year. So refreshing to see children portrayed on screen as children. With realism, depth and sensitivity. Very empowering.
Camino (2008): Beautiful journey of a film. Wednesday
Persepolis (2007): Very fond memories, seeing this at the nziff. Wednesday
