Dark Water   Dogville   The Son
  1. Dark Water With subtlety, subtext and a sensational scare factor, this is a genre film that’s also a work of art.
  2. The Mother Outstanding domestic drama that cuts close so to the bone it almost snaps.
  3. Personal Velocity Resonant drama that appropriates the literary form with striking originality and success.
  4. School of Rock A pure, unadulterated entertainment that strikes all the right chords.
  5. Secretary Liberating taboo-breaker that hits the mark with surprisingly broad appeal.
  6. The Fog of War Exemplary doco film-making about the most important subject of our time.
  7. My Little Eye A horror movie of the zeitgeist that brilliantly masters form and content.
  8. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Not spotless, but the finale clinches this marvelous riddle as a modern classic.
  9. Big Fish Pure Hollywood wonderstuff - Tim Burton’s best since Edward Scissorhands.
  10. Stone Reader A personal journey that ekes out its own cinematic territory and place in one’s mind.

Honourable mentions: Fahrenheit 9/11, Dirty Pretty Things, Monster, Lost in Translation, Thirteen, Cypher, Memories, The Human Stain, The Weather Underground, For Good.

  1. Dogville
Surely a classic - sardonic, scathing and effortlessly crafted.
  2. Stone Reader
Teasing rumination on literature and ambition, plus a great detective story.
  3. Gloomy Sunday
The 'lost arthouse hit' which easily lives up to its reputation.
  4. Sweet Sixteen
Another brilliant heartbreaker from Ken Loach.
  5. Intacto
Beguiling Spanish thriller - takes an imaginative gamble that pays off.
  6. Brother
Tough-minded trawl through the Russian underbelly.
  7. Cypher
Exquisite sci-fi stylings from the dir. of CUBE.
  8. Only the Strong Survive
The best of the Soul Music documentaries of recent years.
  9. Dark Water
Disturbing, subtle chiller of urban and domestic paranoia.
  10. Dark Blue
An emotive and visceral crime thriller (despite the finale).

Bubbling under: My Little Eye, Super Size Me, Christmas, Hoover Street Revival.

  1. The Son 2004’s best, most emotionally affecting, and surprisingly suspenseful film.
  2. Ten Rivetingly simple road movie, adds something new to the form.
  3. Happiness of the Katakuris
It’s a Miike Takashi horror musical with stop motion instead of effects. What’s not to like?
  4. Stone Reader  A McElwee-ish journey with a real stake in talking about books.
  5. Platform  An epic of recent Chinese history in comprehensively muted tones. And with breakdancing.
  6. I'm Going Home A polished gem from the nonagenarian wonder. Michel Piccoli has rarely been better
  7. Infernal Affairs Smartest and best thriller in an otherwise dead genre.
  8. Elephant Beautiful mobile shots follow teens through  unsimplified complexities of modern school life.
  9. Little Dieter Needs to Fly I’m happy to follow Herzog back to the jungle any time he wants.
  10. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ...and from left-field, the shock of a Charlie Kaufman film with emotional power and grace.

Also-running: Dark Water, Raising Victor Vargas, Dawn of the Dead, Blue Car, Lost in Translation, Master and Commander, Shaolin Soccer.

Creature Comforts   The Son

Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer

  1. Creature Comforts Aardman does it again. A hilarious array of characters inspired by the voices of the British public.
  2. Fog Of War A scary reminder of how little it takes for 'rational' people to do completely irrational things...
  3. Spellbound A quirky suspenseful doco made by the personalities and tenaciousness of the kids.
  4. Super Size Me If it helps stop the evils of fast food corporations, it's alright by me.
  5. Devil's Playground A fascinating glimpse into the lives of wayward Amish teenagers...
  6. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind The most coherent work to come from the fertile imagination of Charlie Kaufman yet.
  7. American Splendor Richly textured indie with a nice reverence for it's source material and a bizarre cast of characters.
  8. Dogville An intense theatrical, almost claustrophobic drama with a surprisingly strong performance by Nicole Kidman.
  9. Amandla! The power of music to move a people. Great soundtrack.
  10. Harvie Krumpet Poor, sweet Harvie. The basic claymation is well and truly made up for by the sensitivity and humor of its characters.

Highly commended: Aileen: Life and Death Of A Serial Killer, Monster, Outfoxed, Station Agent, Rage In Placid Lake, The Party's Over, Life And Debt, Pirates Of The Caribbean, Peter Pan, Holes, Andy Goldsworthy: River And Tides, Prisoner Of Paradise.

  1. The Son Compelling, sensory and emotional drama...flawless cinema.
  2. Ten Inventive, tough ride through Iran and the hearts of a female driver and her passengers.
  3. Stone Reader Engaging literary detective work that comes up trumps.
  4. The Isle Natural little love story that fishes up a nasty bite.
  5. Russian Ark The amazing one-shot-wonder, floats through the corridors of Russian history.
  6. Happiness Of The Katakuris Strange Asian genre blending, with dashes of silliness.
  7. Dogville Imaginary, depressed small town America gets its dues. Grim.
  8. Lilya 4-Ever Bad-to-worse heartache, with glimmers of hope.
  9. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind Smart Hollywood, mind-bending romcom.
  10. Raising Victor Vargas Sweet, straight-forward coming-of-age version of the bronx 'Don Juan'.

  1. Aileen: Life And Death Of A Serial Killer  A doco that leaves a red, white and blue brick in your throat.
  2. Dark Water Water hasn't been this terrifying since Jaws.
  3. Shaolin Soccer  A refreshing  comedy totally different to the now-boring Hollywood paradigm.
  4. Life And Debt  A sad doco revealing the truth of Jamaica's tourism industry.
  5. Outfoxed  The leftist antidote to Michael Moore's skullduggery.
  6. Dogville  Gripping theatre right in your lounge!
  7. Spellbound Sloppy editing is more than compensated for by subjects you can't help but enjoy.
  8. Infernal Affairs  The first installment of the action packed, intelligent cop flick trilogy.
  9. Happiness Of The Katakuris  Genre mixing in a bizarre but wildly entertaining form.
  10. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind Both Kaufman and Carrey are blissfully subdued by Michel Gondry in this witty romantic comedy

Second 11:  Lilya 4-Ever, The Grudge, Tokyo Godfathers, Fahrenheit 9/11, Raising Victor Vargas, The Party's Over, Morvern Callar, Devils Playground, Creature Comforts, Super Size Me, Fog Of War.
