Dark Blue World (Tmavomodry Svet) (2001)
A well produced what should prove to be a popular offering.
Mr. Mike's Mondo Video (1979)
As it is episodic there is a chance that something might appeal.

The theatrical version is long enough. The production values and cinematography are admirable.- DVD

Two Brothers (2004)
The animal action segments are excellent.

Ninety minutes was too long for these characters.

The story is a little stale 50 years on but still interesting.
Moonlight and Valentino (1995)
A good female cast makes it watchable.
Blair Witch Project, The (1999)
It might not have been the first hand held camera project to be screened but it has claims to be the most annoying.
True Lies (1994)
Plenty of action and little else. Overlong and struggles to find an ending.
Pope of Greenwich Village, The (1984)
Both Rourke and Roberts comically overplayed their parts more than once.
Fled (1996)
Baldwin and Fishburne are not too bad as a kinda odd couple.

Shot in comforting black and white and the performances have some nice melodramatic touches.

The unflattering location shooting and bleak weather add realism.
Her Bridal Night (Mariée est trop belle, La) (1956)
Brigitte is comfortable enough but the material is thin.
Night of the Fox (TV Mini-series) (1990)
A light and at times thin plot best used as a 3 hour time filler.

A bit hard to follow but a good try.- DVD $14.95
Crow, The (1993)
The art and design work make it worth a try.
Saved! (2004)
The satirical message is well portrayed and should/hopefully get through.
Songcatcher (2000)
The Quinn character is one of the distractions that the screenplay fails to avoid but the locations and above all the music are worth it.
At First Sight (1999)
It takes a while for the screenplay to get interesting and that is when the neurological disorders arise. Mira Sorvino is good throughout along with Kelly McGillis in a supporting role.
Queen & Country (Queen and Country) (2014)
It starts well but the screenplay gradually becomes more uneven. However, there is an excellent performance from David Thewlis that helps.
Ali G In Da House (2002)
It is a pity that there are immature bits.
She-Devil (1989)
Although overall the comedy is a bit forced it does have some good segments.
Love Field (1992)
Not a particularly good screenplay but some of the period details were interesting.
Lilies of the Field (1963)
The set up scenes were the best but it was good light entertainment throughout.

Among other things it is sumptuous.

A hysterical bull in a china shop pounces on a small isolated community. No wonder he ends up on a bonfire.
May (2002)
It at least tries a different angle and is worth a try.
Patrick Melrose (TV Series) (2018)
A memorable performance from Benedict C but also to catch the eye was Pip Torrens. The screenplay has a very good anti over indulgence message.- DVD $34.95
Let Him Have It (1991)
Not bad.
Letter to Brezhnev (1985)
Two spot on performances from our heroines and a screenplay that is great for time and place.
Ooh, You Are Awful (1972)
Dick showcases an impressive range of character impersonations.
Smell of Success, The (2009)
Although it doesn't all work the screenplay is prepared to take chances and is never boring. An interesting cast and soundtrack help.
Twice Born (2012)
There is a lot of staring into each others' eyes and yelling at each other but things calm down a bit when the screenplay focuses on the Sarajevo war.- DVD
$29.95 $19.95
Take Her, She's Mine (1963)
The great Robert Morley provides some relief.

It certainly has some interest 90+ years on.

It was okay but not memorable.
Man Who Wasn't There, The (2001)
Cohen trademark writing, characters, and performances.- DVD

The characters were not very interesting.

No matter the strength of the screenplay the quality of the casting raises the level and the soundtrack is excellent.
Women on the 6th Floor, The (2011)
The first half is okay but it then gets soppy and silly.- DVD $19.95 | Blu-Ray
$19.95 $14.95
Wonder Boys (2000)
The screenplay nearly works but it is not without interest throughout and is supported by a well chosen soundtrack.
Scarface (1983)
It takes a while to tell the story. Compared to Paul Muni, Al looks like a spoilt schoolboy.
Scarface (1932)
Still makes a mark 90+ years on.
Stick Up, The (2002)
It didn't work for me even with James Spader but it could well appeal to others.
Hooper (1978)
The screenplay is good in patches and never boring.
Don Juan DeMarco (1995)
Despite the casting, the screenplay doesn't amount to much.
Mesmerized (1985)
More of a curiosity piece considering the time, location, and above all the casting.
Emma (1996)
A very good cast and telling of the much loved tale.
Frida (2002)
The screenplay doesn't take off which is surprising considering the title character but the production values and the casting are good.
Purge, The: Anarchy (Purge 2) (2014)
More of the same.
Coco Avant Chanel (Coco Before Chanel) (2009)
Audrey is fine and the production values are very good.
Barbarella (1968)
The set designs are terrific and the whole production is out of this world.
House by the River (1950)
Competently made and very atmospheric.
Pump Up the Volume (1990)
Slater is very good and there is a freshness to the material.
Upstairs, Downstairs (TV Series) (2010)
Excellent production values and performances with Eileen Atkins the standout.
Troll (1985)
Not the most sophisticated of creatures but they are entertaining as was the young daughter.
Birdman of Alcatraz (1961)
A strong and always interesting screenplay is complemented by a spot on casting.
Dead Poet's Society (1989)
35 years on it hasn't dated too well. Also, the ending is melodramatic and silly.
Sayonara (1957)
It is heavy on the romantics but there are better segments that include Japanese culture.
Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing and Charm School (2005)
A strange screenplay, one that looks to have been stitched together, but the dancing sequences are good. Marisa Tomei is very good as to be expected.
Hercules in New York (Hercules Goes Bananas) (1970)
1 star for its technical competence, two for its entertainment value.
Ghost Bride (2013)
It has some worthy horror segments.
A Love Song for Bobby Long (2004)
The soundtrack was pretty good.
Midnight Cowboy (1969)
The two lead performances, the street scenes, and the screenplay are excellent. The icing on the cake is one of the all time great soundtracks. It is selectively used and fits the screenplay like a glove.
Hitcher, The (1986)
A good effort from a disturbed Rutger is the only highlight.
Everything Went Fine (2020)
The screenplay went on too long and began to drag. Dispensing with some of the fringe characters would have helped. - DVD $29.95
Anti-Trust (2001)
A decent enough screenplay that commendably keeps moving along.
Radical (2023)
The first half was okay, but the screenplay goes downhill and ends up being a crowd pleaser.- DVD $29.95
Jacket, The (2005)
The writing will appeal to those who don't mind being given the runaround.
Big Business (1988)
The casting of the four ladies gets the screenplay through.
Merkel (2022)
Well done Angela. Among your many attributes, you will be remembered for your dignity.- DVD $29.95
Monkey Bone (2001)
Brendan overdoes it a bit. The makeup of the rest of the "characters" ensures that it is never boring.
Monster (Kaibutsu) (2023)
It told the story in a roundabout way but it got there in the end.- DVD $29.95
Our Little Sister (Umimachi Diary) (2015)
A commercial offering but the four sisters' interactions and the photography make it hard to dislike.
Foxy Brown (1974)
There is a great first scene featuring Antonio Fargas but from then on move over males it is Pam Grier v Kathryn Loder.
Private's Progress (1956)
Great casting, not just Ian Carmichael in the lead, but Terry Thomas heading an excellent supporting cast.
Tiger's Tail, The (2006)
An interesting concept but it could have been portrayed a little better. A more than useful Irish cast though.
Magdalene Sisters, The (2002)
When first released the film would have had more shock value than it does 20 years on when stories of institutional abuse have become more common place.- Poster (VG) $14.95
In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon (2024)
Comprehensive.- DVD $29.95 | Blu-Ray $34.95
Big Fish (2003)
A series of well told tales assisted by some good casting. The Buscemi segment, the best.
Grampire (Moonrise) (1991)
The distinctive Al Lewis is the only real interest. The screeching of the kids is hard work.
Ed and His Dead Mother (1992)
A black comedy that works. Buscemi and Margolyes are terrific.
Live Free or Die (2006)
Relies on bad language rather than a script.
Kill Bill - Vol. 1 (2003)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The (1974)
When released it was the cutting edge for its type.
Bandits (2001)
It needed to be 20 mins. shorter – it either couldn't find an ending or didn't want to end. The early scenes were strong but it got disjointed and repetitive toward the end. A shame.
East West East (2009)
The story dips in interest during the team's return journey.
Hotel Splendide (1999)
The first half is stronger than the second but the quality of the quality of the casting and the interesting set designs gets you through.
Man From Elysian Fields, The (2001)
If there was a lead performer with a bit more life this would have helped the screenplay. However, there is talent in the three female performers led by Olivia Williams, and Jagger and Coburn could never be boring.
West Side Story (1961)
The story is a bit simplistic but the dancing is great and does justice to the set designs.- DVD
$19.95 $14.95, $29.95 $15
Angel Mine (1979)
A great soundtrack.
Came a Hot Friday (1985)
40 years on not aging too well except for the odd segment and the 80s location shooting.
Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead (2014)
The mayhem is unrelenting.- DVD $24.95 | Blu-Ray $29.95
Mr. In-Between (The Killing Kind) (2001)
The British do hard edged violence very well but there was little freshness in the screenplay. David Calder as usual was very good.
Mists of Avalon, The (2001)
Anjelica had the strongest presence by far. She should have stood for President.
Youngblood (1986)
Standard ice hockey drama.
American Flyers (1985)
Grant struggled with his performance, the screenplay was soppy at times but there was some good Colorado location shooting.
Moby Dick (1956)
The production is very good but it needs some good supporting performances to steady the ship.
Paulie (1998)
It is well done and is good family entertainment.
Dog Soldiers (2002)
A bit limited in scope but the screenplay has the odd bite now and again.
Alien (1979)
It has genuine suspense.
City Under Siege (2010)
A bit of this a bit of that – a scattergun approach to find an audience.
When Borat Came to Town (2008)
It was much better than the Borat film.
Cruel Sea, The (1952)
Good attention to the nuts and bolts of fighting a war at close quarters.
Laura (1944)
The screenplay is a bit dated and the droning of Dana Andrews doesn't help. Memorable theme song.
Around the World in 80 Days (1956)
Well done to the Casting Director. A quality production that should be worth seeing for generations to come.- DVD
$19.95 $14.95
Robot Dreams (2023)
Should be a winner with families in particular. The soundtrack is well chosen, and well used.- DVD $29.95
Rare Birds (2001)
An appealing screenplay with a message for the gullible.
Hustle (1975)
The screenplay might qualify as anti hero.
Samurai Commando: Mission 1549 (2005)
Great plot idea but the after a while I couldn't distinguish who was fighting who or what side a character was on. The characters also got a bit excited and started yelling at each other hysterically even though (I think) they were meant to be comrades.
American Gangster (2007)
Never ending, but it has its good segments, although overall it has all been done before.
Breaking and Entering (2006)
I thought it lost its way a touch toward the end but the writing was good in the main and the casting was excellent. Both Ray Winstone and Vera Farmiga did some scene stealing.
Wild Side (1995)
Manic.
Man of the West (1958)
Not your standard Western.
Catholic Boys (Heaven Help Us) (1985)
Always interesting but the scenes with the psycho Brother were the best.
Children of the Corn (1984)
Could have been influenced by "The Wicker Man" (1973).
Perfect Days (2023)
An undemanding screenplay with some good location shooting.- DVD $29.95 | Blu-Ray $34.95
Waz (w Delta z) (2007)
Violence for violence sake.
Girl, Interrupted (1999)
Bridge at Remagen, The (1969)
Sharing the screentime between the gung–ho American forces and the more staid Germans helped the interest level.
Kinjite - Forbidden Subjects (1989)
Very uneven.
Once Bitten (1985)
One good dance number but little else.
Gimme Shelter (1970)
Great documentary making at the sharp end.
Last Song, The (2010)
Piranha (1978)
It has some nice touches.- DVD $14.95 | Blu-Ray $19.95
Missing in Action (1984)
Our leading man on another killing spree.
Monkey Puzzle (2007)
Another screenplay about under prepared townies in the wild.- DVD
$29.95 $14.95
Men at Work (1990)
It would have been better if an experienced comedy director had been at the helm.
Tree of Life, The (2011)
I was surprised that the director abandoned the beautiful visual scenes in favour of human characters to tell the story.
Sommersby (1993)
The plot idea is more interesting than the screenplay.
Weekender (2011)
The screenplay was okay but it was not really strong enough to make up for the choice of soundtrack.- DVD
$29.95 $14.95
Bunker, The (1981)
Another fine performance from Hopkins, An interesting screenplay climaxing with the painful murder of the Goebbels children.
Arena, The (Naked Warriors) (1973)
More than the usual amount of stabbing and poking but it is not without interest and worth a try.
Two Deaths (1995)
Good casting but there is little appeal in the screenplay.
Back to School (1986)
Rodney D is fine – particularly in small doses – but it did help when Sally K shared the screen.
Name of the Rose, The (1986)
A tad long but the writing, casting, and the sets certainly help.
September (1987)
A pretty good cast is on hand in case anything happens. At least September is one of the shorter months.
Delta Force 2 (1990)
Billy Drago was good as the psycho – mind you Norris's character wasn't much better.
Live a Little, Love a Little (1968)
Harmless.
Tailor of Panama, The (2000)
A well written screenplay with Geoffery Rush a standout in an interesting cast.
Night Moves (2013)
It is a refreshingly low key drama without any melodrama and it has no unnecessary sub–plots.
Safe Men (1998)
Not too bad – a light comedy to relax with.
Attenberg (2010)
Original, particularly when our two misfits are instep together.
Soul Kitchen (2009)
I prefer the director's more serious projects.
Half Baked (1998)
Not a particularly strong offering.
Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool (2017)
I don't think two people yelling at each other is much of a screenplay but the casting all round is very good.
Odds and Evens (Pari e dispari) (1978)
The physical comedy, associated with the pair, is maintained and this offering should please their fans.
Double Trouble (1967)
Most of the songs are not that great and overall this is not worth the trouble.
Foot Fist Way (2006)
You can see what the screenwriter was trying to do but it doesn't quite hit the mark.
Ben-Hur (1959)
All the action scenes are very well done but some of the padding is overdrawn and lacking in interest. Hugh Griffiths puts much needed interest and life into the performances with his character.
Who Finds a Friend Finds a Treasure (1981)
Plenty of fisticuffs – in other words it follows formula for this duo.
Silk (2007)
Nice to look at but Michael Pitt doesn't have much life about him nor much of anything else for that matter. The soundtrack and the voice over were in regular competition and neither came out the winner.
Celebration, The (Festen) (1999)
Aka "The Happy Family".
Russia House, The (1990)
It wasn't that easy to hear what Michelle was saying because of her accent but the writing was good and the casting was of the expected quality.
Major Payne (1995)
An uneven comedy, but there are some better segments, that will make it worth a try.
Bet, The (2007)
The screenplay has little new material. The characters deserve each other and do not resemble a typical Australian – one actually plays polo.
Kinky Boots (2005)
The screenplay handles the sweet better than the bitter and although it takes a dip it does recover for the end.
Fifth Estate, The (5ifth Estate, The) (2013)
A reasonable addition to the WikiLeaks genre.
Four Musketeers, The (1973)
The comedy plot idea is getting a bit stale by this stage but there is enough character in the casting to maintain the interest.
Eight Men Out (1989)
The screenplay was solid and the story, interesting. Enjoyed the period details for e.g. the advertising hoardings at the ballpark.
Guru, The (2002)
The screenplay gets a bit soppy at times but the soundtrack and musical segments are worthwhile.
Gorky Park (1983)
A decent screenplay but William Hurt wasn't convincing. However, there were other performances that helped compensate.
Fly, The (1986)
A genuine horror. Terrific work by the makeup and special effects departments.
Stigmata (1999)
Arquette, Byrne, and Pryce is a decent cast. Not a memorable screenplay but it did burn up the screen.
Yours, Mine and Ours (1968)
Not a bad comedy plot idea and is still watchable 55 years on.
Sweet Revenge (The Revenger's Comedies) (2002)
Not a bad comedy plot idea but there is talent underused in the supporting cast.
Possession (1981)
I've always labelled him as a consistently good actor but Sam Neill is awful in this. The screenplay is not great but it is not without interest.
Mr. Majestyk (1974)
Bronson was good in this but Al Lettieri was even better.
Chato's Land (1972)
The screenplay was okay and Bronson and Palance sharing the screen were never going to be boring.
Code of Silence (1985)
Henry Silva, one of the very good bad guys, is the best thing about this.
Invasion U.S.A. (1985)
The screenplay has plenty of firepower.
Unforgiven, The (1960)
An intelligent story with strong performances from Lancaster and old hands Gish and Bickford.
Battlestar Galactica (TV Mini Series) (2003)
It took a little while for the SF to get into play but it picked up once the bedroom scenes were over.
Mystic Masseur, The (2002)
Well written and there is plenty of colour in the design and wardrobe. A talented Indian cast do the honours.- DVD $14.95
Apache (1954)
Burt looked a bit silly which is unfortunate as he is too good an actor to be ridiculed, albeit unintentionally. However, the story is decent enough and probably, well intentioned.
Home By Christmas (2010)
The screenplay was presented in an interesting fashion with Tony Barry being an excellent casting choice.- DVD
$20 $15
Sleeping Beauty (1987)
Whilst the story is timeless, and always has some interest, this is a modest production.
Odd Man Out (1947)
Well written with believable characters which is thanks in no small way to the casting. The street scenes were memorable wet and dry.
Confessions of an American Girl (American Girl) (2002)
The slightly offbeat screenplay works most of the time and is helped by some pretty good casting choices.
Ghost (1990)
A bit dated 30+ years on although some of Whoopi's scenes are not too bad.
Last House on the Left, The (1972)
If the sales of chainsaws increased after the release of this film the authorities would have been worried.
Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane, The (1976)
The screenplay might be a product of its time and may not be made 50 years on. It is worth a look because of young Jodie's performance. Young yes but already a veteran at such a young age.
Woman Next Door, The (1981)
What there was of a screenplay provided little challenge to the talents of the two leads.
Lifeforce (1985)
From the excellent pen of Colin Wilson. Railsback is not very good but there is some talent in the cast. Well worth a try.
Life Coach, The (Le Coach) (2009)
The material is light and not particularly original but the leads are watchable.
Beaches (1988)
A ball of noisy energy.
Last Metro, The (1980)
The story within the story extends the running time somewhat but the writing, casting, and the production values help you through.
Mystic River (2003)
Clint seems most comfortable with projects that run over two hours. Here is another one. A reasonable story and the best bits are when Bacon and Fishburne are working off each other.
It's Only Money (1962)
A solid comedy thanks mainly to a good cast with Jack Weston scene stealing.
Crows O (Kurôzu zero) (2007)
Try viewing it as a comedy and imagine that the director is taking the mickey out of the hysterics and posturing of the kids. Too long though as the action sequences have a similarity to them.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
A classic sci–fi tale competently brought to the screen.
Butterfly Lovers (2008)
Too many slow motion camera shots and females getting hit across the chops by hysterical males. The traditional music is nice though.
What Price Glory? (1952)
A funny animal in some ways. The soldiers behave like cowboys and the screenplay is a mixture of war, comedy, and music. Entertaining enough, however.
Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)
A good plot idea with a very good soundtrack. The first half of the screenplay is the best.
Persuasion (2007)
Sally saves script writers time with her facial expressions. Very well produced without going overboard.
Blood For Dust (2023)
I think they made a genuine attempt to put some intelligence in the script to set it apart from the many others in the genre.- DVD $29.95 | Blu-Ray $34.95
End Of The Spear (2005)
You end up getting the point.
Smart People (2008)
A good female cast. A beard covers part of Quaid's smirk which helps.
Lean On Me (1989)
One of a number of classroom dramas. Freeman yells at everyone from start to finish, others are yelling and it becomes a yellathon.- DVD
$25 $18.75
Flight of the Navigator (1986)
The kid got a bit screechy at times but the screenplay is intelligent and entertaining.
Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner) (2001)
The length of the screenplay requires patience, but if slow, is never boring, and there is the location to admire plus an interesting soundtrack.- DVD
$29.95 $15
Ladyhawke (1985)
Forty years on it is not ageing too well, particularly for its lengthy running time.
Village, The (2004)
A slow burner but not that suspenseful when all is said and done. There is a fine cast but not all of them are fully employed.
Up in Smoke (1978)
Probably can't say it was like a breath of fresh air but it was enjoyable all the same.
Ballet Shoes (2007)
Made for TV but it is BBC and is a good quality production. A strong story is handled well by a well chosen cast.
In a Valley of Violence (2016)
It does break the Western mould now and again but overall it is business as usual. The best performances are from Ethan Hawke and Taissa Farmiga.
To Wong Foo...Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1996)
The single joke scenario is difficult to maintain for any length of time.
Willow (1988)
The creatures were fine and there was plenty of killing which should keep the kids happy.- DVD
$15 $11.25
Dominick and Eugene (1988)
Bittersweet without too much cloyingness. The casting helped.
Devil Dared Me To, The (2007)
An action packed 75 minutes got better as it went along or more likely I got up to speed.
Edward II (1991)
As expected, a little different. Although not all segments appealed, the creativity, and originality, deserve to be recognised. Tilda Swinton is a compulsory casting in this kind of thing.
Norma Rae (1979)
The scenes in the textile mill were well produced and the industrial relations situation believable enough to warrant Sally sticking it up 'em.
Brute Force (1947)
I thought the climax strained belief a bit but for the rest it was well made with Hume Cronyn convincing.
You Only Live Once (1937)
Always hard to see this combination of director and casting failing and it doesn't.
Body and Soul (1947)
Very competent in all departments especially the fight scenes.
Waiting Room, The (2007)
A decent screenplay and worth a look.
Desperado (1995)
It doesn't get better than the opening scene courtesy of Steve Buscemi.
White Bird in a Blizzard (2014)
A reasonable screenplay but the film's strength is in the performances of the mother and the daughter slugging it out.
Paris When it Sizzles (1964)
I suppose Audrey was always going to be on the casting director's shortlist for this.
Zone of Interest, The (2023)
You should also see Alain Resnais's 30min. "Night and Fog" (1955).- DVD $29.95 | Blu-Ray $34.95
Saint-Ex (1995)
An interesting presentation of the screenplay. A slice of an obviously interesting life might encourage further reading.
Walk in the Clouds, A (1995)
It is okay as a well produced period piece.
Lone Wolf McQuade (1983)
Chuck is more watchable than others of his ilk.
Cemetery Junction (2010)
Most of it was okay, but now and again, there is some intentionally doubtful material which lowers the comedy's overall quality.
Mary (2005)
A strange screenplay.
Shinjuku Incident (San suk si gin) (2009)
The material lacks freshness and Jackie looks a touch out of place.
El Mariachi (1992)
The screenplay has more intelligence and restraint than some of his later work.- DVD
$15 $11.25
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
A well written bitter/sweet screenplay. The ensemble casting is spot on and the cast are at their best in the therapy scenes which are outstanding.- DVD
$24.95 $18.70
Anna (2019)
It got very repetitive, even silly, and some restraint in the number of murders would have resulted in a more watchable screenplay.- Blu-Ray $24.95
Pearl (2022)
It is different and for that reason alone worth a try although not to everyone's taste I wouldn't imagine. Mia Goth does very well.
Machete (2010)
Plenty of blood and guts and other stuff. Probably best viewed as a comedy
Apple Tree Yard (TV Mini-series) (2017)
The screenplay needs patience but the court scenes are worth waiting for as they are competently handled. On the downside is an annoying unnecessary soundtrack.
Cloverfield Paradox, The (2018)
It didn't really take off.
Shopping (1993)
The overall result was slightly disappointing considering all the spade work that had been done. However, visually it was very good with some great exterior set designs topped off by a vibrant soundtrack.
Breathless (1983)
The street scenes are not too bad and are beautifully shot but most of the action is indoors.
Blame it on Rio (1984)
Slightly risque when released.
California Suite (1978)
It plays a bit like a play but the quality of the casting gets you through.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, The (1986)
Its sole purpose seemed to be to outdo the original.
American Ninja 2: The Confrontation (1987)
It tried to instill a bit of humour in the screenplay – probably as a desperate measure.
Love Eternal (2013)
What could have been a tricky subject is handled in a low key and decent manner.
Crossing Over (2009)
Although it is hard to tell at times from the untidy screenplay it may have been made with good intentions toward the immigrants.
Up 'n' Under (1998)
It doesn't stray too far from formula but it is enjoyable thanks in no small part to some character actors given their place in the sun.
Los Angeles Plays Itself (2003)
Impressive film library research with background historical information is translated into coherent storytelling.
Special Relationship, The (2010)
The writing is pretty good and the screenplay is not as dry as it could have been. Michael Sheen is very good and has found a niche in this kind of role.
Face of an Angel, The (2014)
The screenplay lacked focus – it was easily sidetracked.
Bio-Dome (1996)
Commendably the plot idea is fresh which is more than can be said for the unnecessary farting. Hard to dislike all the same.
I Am David (2003)
It highlighted probably a forgotten part of postwar history.
Carrie 2: The Rage (1999)
Okay, but it is nothing to get excited over.
Love and Death (1975)
Quite well done.- DVD
$20 $15
Trust the Man (2006)
There is some talent in the casting but little in the writing.
Over the Top (1987)
Soppy.
Neverwhere (Mini-series) (1996)
Although the last 3 episodes are not as good as the first 3 it is recommended viewing.
Malice (1993)
The writing is pretty good but you really do not care what happens to the characters – they deserve each other.
Le Trou (The Hole; The Night Watch) (1960)
Two hours with a small number of characters and in a limited space. Terrific filmmaking.
Solaris (1972)
The pacing of the scenes in the space station was a challenge but the interest of the basic storyline saved the day.
Ford v Ferrari (Le Mans '66) (2019)
It is over long but it is well produced.
Alexander the Great (1956)
I don't believe he was that great, based on other readings, more of a guy with personal issues. However, this does have a cast worthy of attention.
Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill, The (2004)
Cute. An undemanding watch.- DVD
$20 $15
Return to Paradise (1998)
It was a good plot idea but the screenplay gets romantically sidetracked and is melodramatic in its final stages.
Innocence (2004)
The photography both in light and dark was top rate and created alternately stunning visuals and then a sinister atmosphere. The material was fresh and I don't know how much coaching the kids playing the lead characters required but all were good.
Snow Angels (2007)
An uplifting drama about winter, breakup, and loss.
Churchill: The Hollywood Years (2004)
A mishmash of a cast but they only add to the interesting confusion of the screenplay.
Sabrina (1954)
The screenplay is undemanding but well written, but the strength is in the casting of Audrey playing a young romantic with Bogart and Holden the old(er) men. Nothing wrong with the support casting either.- DVD
$19.95 $14.95
Electric Horseman, The (1979)
An excellent director and there is nothing wrong with the casting but the screenplay just meanders.
Deadly Companions, The (1961)
Not for the first time in a screenplay is Maureen fighting off men (I don't know why). The screenplay is at its best until the inevitable happens.
Tank Girl (1995)
Lori is terrific, and during the screenplay, anything goes and usually does.
Harsh Times (2005)
Quickly forgettable.
Deathdream (Dead of Night) (1972)
A very good plot idea and well written.
And Soon the Darkness (1970)
Not great but it has some genuinely suspenseful moments and maybe worth a try.
London to Brighton (2006)
Tired of watching commercial cinema(?)
Myth of Fingerprints, The (1997)
Another ensemble talkie but Julianne Moore and Blythe Danner ease the passage.
Radiant City (2006)
Educational and entertaining both.
Nell (1994)
It is not great but the screenplay is far from routine and there are three fine performers in Liam, Jodie and, Natasha Richardson.
F.T.W. (Last Ride, The) (1994)
Mickey mumbles his way through another one.
Very Long Engagement, A (Long dimanche de fiançailles, Un) (2004)
The storytelling takes its time but the art and design work are excellent.
Hunting Elephants (2013)
Not too bad – rates reasonably well against other films about amateurs carrying out a heist.
Big (1988)
It isn't ageing too well.
Weight of Water, The (2000)
Nothing wrong with the casting but even a storm at sea couldn't lift the lethargy.
Little Richard: I Am Everything (2023)
I like his attitude to those that used his material and made themselves rich.- DVD $34.95
Tadpole (2002)
A very light plot idea hardly seems worthwhile to film. Sigourney looks a bit embarrassed.
Quartet (1949)
The strength of the writing is bettered only by the quality of the casting.
Rollerball (1975)
The general screenplay has dated a bit but the Rollerball scenes still have an effect.
Message, The (Al-risalah Aka Mohammad, Messenger Of God) (1977)
The action sequences are okay and not overdone but the total running time could be a challenge for a general viewing audience.
Shifty (2008)
Its anti–drug message is enhanced because the characters are believable and there are no frills in the screenplay. Daniel Mays is compulsory viewing. The soundtrack is pretty good as well.
True Colours (1991)
Hard to make this kind of character interesting I guess.
16 Years of Alcohol (2003)
Made for the right reasons the screenplay veered between violence, and these segments got repetitive, and reform which lacked interest.
A Good Year (2006)
A watchable time filler thanks mainly to the casting.
Next Best Thing, The (2000)
It is more of a drama than a comedy (and is all the better for it) as it has a serious second theme.
Coriolanus (2011)
There are some good performances from those who survive the killing.- DVD
$19.95 $14.95
Stunt Rock (1978)
A good combination of real life stunts and rock.- DVD $19.95
Point Blank (2010)
The type of action the French do well but there is not a great deal else.
Cruise of the Gods (2002)
The best bits concerned David Walliams. Philip Jackson lurking around in support was also good.- DVD $24.95
Above and Beyond (TV Mini-Series) (2006)
An interesting and should be told story, but typically with a min–series, it is easily distracted.
Shakespeare Wallah (1965)
Although the screenplay sags a bit toward the end it does give a fair portrayal of the passing of an age in two diverse worlds.
Monk, The (2011)
Vincent is a barrel of laughs. There is a good gothic atmosphere at times but little suspense.
Dogma (1999)
When you have one performer with recognised class – in this case, Alan Rickman – it is interesting to compare the rest of the performers against him. The screenplay is a bit hit and miss but interesting enough.
Daughters of the Dust (1991)
There seems to be little in the way of a normal conversation between the characters – more speechmaking. Beautifully photographed.
Harry and the Hendersons (1987)
For the most part, it is a decent comedy despite the screaming kid.
Heat and Dust (1982)
Very well produced but the screenplay is long and may need patience. Great soundtrack.
Ginger Snaps (2000)
Familiar but a little bit better than a lot of other similar screenplays.
Cedar Boys (2009)
Although it doesn't break new ground the screenplay commendably doesn't glamorise.
Evelyn (2002)
A very interesting story with a more than useful cast. There is some melodrama but it is manageable.
Place in the Sun, A (1951)
The plot idea is as old as the hills and although the screenplay is probably correctly paced for time and place it needs patience.
A Change of Seasons (1980)
MacLaine and Hopkins wasted.
Battle of Shaker Heights, The (2003)
Shia's character is a bit of a pain but the screenplay is not too bad.
Under the Skin (2013)
An intriguing screenplay and a splendid performance from Scarlett.
House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
The screenplay is a tad untidy but it is never boring.
Dr T and the Women (2000)
The screenplay seems a lot of fuss over not much but it is hard to dislike.
Handmaid's Tale, The (1990)
The performances are good but the strength is in the screenplay which is always interesting.- DVD
$20 $15
Beverly Hills Cop (1984)
40yrs on it is getting a bit dated but it is still entertaining.
Poison Ivy (1992)
Sara and Drew work very well as a team and the screenplay is at its best in its early scenes when they are together most.
Soylent Green (1973)
Another Godlike performance from Heston detracts somewhat but the screenplay is interesting enough to survive.
Cat Person (2023)
I nearly came to like this – I don't know where they dug the male up from but he was a little different. It was too long however for the material and it would have been better with a more compact screenplay.
Maximum Overdrive (1986)
Enjoyable if in the mood. The screenplay doesn't do things by halves.
Sleeper (1973)
Most of the comedy, particularly the physical, is still worth a watch 50 years on.- DVD
$25 $18.75
Larry Crowne (2011)
It was pleasant enough.
Cyborg (1989)
Violence for violence sake.
Magicians (2007)
My introduction to Mitchell and Webb.
Human Traffic (1999)
The soundtrack is integral to the screenplay.
Life After Beth (2014)
Not a bad plot idea and despite a lively performance from Aubrey Plaza as a walking dead it doesn't work as well as it could have – the comedy is a bit forced.
Hard Eight (Sydney) (1996)
The writing is excellent and there are four good performances to do it justice.- Blu-Ray $24.95
Merlin (1998)
A good telling but the strength lies in its eclectic casting, particularly on its female side.
See No Evil (Blind Terror) (1971)
Enjoyed the camera work in particular during the impressive opening sequence.
Lovers of the Arctic Circle (1998)
A romantic fantasy – although it doesn't go around in a circle it doesn't go anywhere fast.
Wind Will Carry Us, The (2001)
You get caught up in the confines of the small village, then you are released into the panoramic open spaces which are beautifully shot.
Eyes of Laura Mars (1978)
The screenplay is a little uneven overall but at least there is some freshness to it and there is some great location shooting of New York.
College (1927)
Keaton's agility and timing on display.
Masters of the Universe (1987)
There is an enjoyable cheapness about it.
Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (2005)
You would hope that the corporate and financial sectors would learn from Enron(?).
Grizzly Man (2005)
We could have done with less of Grizzly Man but the wildlife photography was pretty good.
Heaven's Gate (1980)
The screenplay does have its quieter moments but the photography and the action sequences are excellent. John Hurt is a standout in the early scenes but appears very little afterward.
Marty (1955)
Romance screenwriters – see how it is done – no need for bedroom scenes or even kissing plus a finish within 90.
Death at a Funeral (2010)
A terrific comedy plot idea but the comedy is forced and the production plays more like a sequel.
A Cure for Wellness (2016)
A bit elongated but there some decent set designs and suspenseful segments.
Everyday People (2004)
The characters are believable which certainly helps.
War Games (1983)
A well written screenplay with a touch of comedy and plenty of satire.
Hoosiers (1986)
Another splendid performance from Gene Hackman. The early screenplay depicts small town insularity very well. The opening scenes of Gene driving along rural roads trying to find the school are the best.
Prince and the Pauper, The (2000)
A decent enough adaptation of a timeless story.
Slipper and the Rose, The (1975)
Although not strong musically Michael Hordern and Edith Evans are in form and make it worth a watch.
Wrong Arm of the Law, The (1962)
The supporting cast headed by the wonderful Lionel Jeffries are the icing on the cake. The comedic writing is excellent.
Angels in New York (2009)
It had varying levels of interest.
Price Check (2012)
It doesn't work too well – maybe Parker was a little too strong for the rest of the cast.
Love and a 45 (1994)
It has little to recommend it and it has little that hasn't been done before.rn
Purple Rose of Cairo (1985)
A good plot idea and production values. Mia spoke with a whine – I wonder where she got that from?- DVD
$25 $18.75
Flesh and Blood (1985)
Unfortunately, it has an unnecessary and prolonged rape scene and therefore loses a *.
Sleepover (2004)
A bit soppy toward the end but harmless otherwise.
Tár (Tar) (2022)
The musical segments were interesting and informative.
Uproar (2023)
It is a light comedy that mixes some historical elements. There are some good location shots of Dunedin.- DVD $29.95 | Blu-Ray $34.95
Angel-A (2005)
Unfortunately, the screenplay falls away after a little bit over an hour but the scenes, where we have the bridge to ourselves, are memorable. The B&W is excellent and the relationship of the odd couple makes it worthwhile.
Igby Goes Down (2002)
There are plenty of reasons not to like a number of the characters but the writing, the casting, and the performances see it through.- DVD
$20 $15
Adoration (2008)
A well written screenplay but one that is not an easy one to follow. A second viewing for me will be of benefit.
Salute (2008)
Excellent athletics coverage, and if a bit light on the racism in Australia, it has worthwhile coverage of the civil rights situation in 60s USA.
Woody Guthrie - This Machine Kills Fascists (2005)
This documentary would have claims to be the definitive account of Guthrie's life.
Train, The (1964)
The early scenes in the railyards are outstanding. Although it doesn't get as good again there are still some excellent action segments to follow. In beautiful black and white.
Nobel Son (2007)
Heaven knows why they needed the talented Alan Rickman for this.
Better than Sex (2000)
It is about two people in bed.
World War II in Colour (TV Series) (World War 2 in Colour) (2009)
Impressive research and collation of library film with a top narrative performance.
Bird (1988)
Very long but this is compensated for by some very good musical segments and production values.
Gone Baby Gone (2007)
Not a convincing screenplay but there is a very good final scene and some of the characters are interesting. The best performance is from Amy Ryan.
Third Man, The (1949)
The screenplay is stodgy in parts, particularly in the first half, but every now and then there is a knockout scene. The final scene is a wonderful unforgettable anti–climax. The zither player works overtime to produce a unique soundtrack.
Sightseers (2012)
Enough of the comedy works to make it worthwhile.
Aviator, The (1985)
The flying sequences were good but the screenplay was very predictable.
Apollo 11 (2019)
It is good that somebody had thought to bring a camera along to record the event.
The Origin of Evil (2022)
The writing is pretty good and there are a few cat fights when things reach boiling point. Laure Calamy is excellent.- DVD $29.95
Liberal Arts (2012)
Another writer/director romantic screenplay. As usual, nothing of note happens.
Baraka (1993)
Outstanding.
Laurence Anyways (2012)
I couldn't stay with the characters for the long running time but the film still continued to offer some excellent segments. The look of the film – design and art work plus the wardrobe/makeup ensured there was always something to arrest the eye.- DVD $29.95
Gods and Generals (2002)
A bit of a battle.
Miles Davis Story, The (2001)
Very informative through a good selection of interviewees and archival film.
Past Lives (2023)
It is a relaxing watch. Thankfully the three main characters are not annoying.
Story of Ricky (Riki-Oh aka Lai Wong) (1991)
The violence soon gets repetitive.
Joe Strummer - The Future is Unwritten (2007)
A very well produced documentary with adequate time being devoted to both Strummer and to the band. It contains plenty of interviews and archival film.
Living (2022)
Have you ever wondered what a London office in the 1950s looked like? Maybe not.
An Angel at My Table (1990)
There is a smooth performance transition between the three Janet's. Alexia Keogh has my soft spot & the early scenes are the best. Kerry shows her range in coping with the bulk of the screenplay which has its odd lull in particular the Spanish segment.
Beauty Remains (Mei ren yi jiu) (2005)
It has a very familiar screenplay.
Curious George (2006)
The Jack Johnson soundtrack certainly helped.
Brighton Rock (2010)
Although the screenplay gradually falls away there is some fine location shooting and splendid performances from Andrea Riseborough with great support from veterans Helen Mirren, John Hurt, and Phil Davis.- DVD $19.95, $34.95 | Blu-Ray $19.95
A Thousand Times Goodnight (2013)
The quality of Juliette makes it watchable.
Collaborator (2011)
The two male leads were fine but Olivia was wasted. The screenplay played like a play and as a film needed patience.
Noble House (Mini-Series) (1988)
It takes a while to tell the story. The best segments involve John Rhys–Davies, with Dudley Sutton also livening things up. The supporting cast, with the likes of the dependable Gordon Jackson, is overall pretty good.
US vs. John Lennon, The (2006)
He was a threat.
A-Team, The (TV Series) (1982)
Series 1: There are hints of humour but it is more a curiosity piece 40 years on.
Mistress of Spices (2005)
Not an enticing screenplay but there is a good score to listen to.
Squaring the Circle: The Story of Hipgnosis (2023)
Po Powell is an excellent frontman and is the mainstay of the interviews. An excellently produced documentary.- DVD $29.95
Barbie (2023)
If for nothing else it should be remembered for its artwork and set designs.
Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)
Nearly as good as the better of the Elm Street episodes.
Nightmare On Elm Street 5: Dream Child, A (1989)
Good work by Freddy's makeup people but otherwise more of the same.
Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, A (1987)
Great work by the makeup team again. A worthy sequel to the original.
Mothering Sunday (2021)
The Wardrobe Department was not needed for every second scene.
United States of Tara (TV Series) (2009)
The talented Toni is well supported by a dependable John Corbett.
JSA: Joint Security Area (2000)
The screenplay is intelligent, anti–war, and has some nice satirical touches.- DVD $29.95
Redhead From Wyoming, The (1953)
It wouldn't have been much without Maureen.
Huff (TV Series) (2004)
The characters are pretty human which is a plus and the casting in particular of Azaria, Danner, and Platt is spot on.
Acquitted (TV Series) (Frikjent) (2015)
Decent writing and landscapes.- DVD $29.95, $44.95
Antonia's Line (1996)
The material is fresh and generally unpredictable.
Mad About You (TV Series) (1992)
Saw the 4disc Collection Edition. Not really that funny except for the Mel Brook's episode but overall it doesn't insult your intelligence and Helen Hunt is always good value.
Slumber Party Massacre (1982)
No surprises here. The cover tells it all. For its type however, it is as good as many others.
Mondovino (2004)
A bit too long – I am sure it could have made its point in shorter time. It would have been more interesting when first released than twenty years further on. Worth a watch though.
Iceman Cometh, The (Time Warriors) (1989)
A very good mix of comedy and action based on an entertaining plot idea.
Novocaine (2001)
The screenplay is uneven but the plot idea is not too bad. Helena Bonham Carter and Laura Dern take the limelight by some margin.
Down To Earth (1947)
The screenplay is of minor interest but there is some real talent in the supporting cast for eg. the great Edward Everett Horton.
Short Circuit (1986)
It has lasted 40 years and it should stay around quite a bit longer.
Doctor Zhivago (TV Series) (2003)
Considering its length it doesn't drag to any great extent. The period setting is handled very well and there is good use of library film.
Nightmare On Elm Street, A (1984)
Probably influential for other horror filmmakers.
Road To Bali (1952)
Good clean fun.
Americans, The (TV Series) (2013)
If the characters spent less time in the bedroom it might have been a couple of hours shorter but otherwise, it was well written. There is a good performance from Noah Emmerich.- DVD
$29.95 $20
Jericho (TV Series) (2006)
S1: A good plot idea but by the time I got to the last episode I'd forgotten what it was.
Journey to the End of the Night (2006)
The screenplay wasn't convincing. Fraser shows his limitations and is embarrassing but Glenn, as usual, is worth a watch.rn
Courier, The (Ironbark) (2020)
Perhaps a not so well remembered espionage episode. Fine performances add to the interest.
Way We Were, The (1973)
It would have been better if the screenplay had developed the political segments and had less romance.
Scanner Darkly, A (2006)
Found it hard to tune in to the storytelling but I admired and enjoyed the style of the animation.
Barrio 13 (District B13) (2004)
The stunt work was good but the never ending violence just became meaningless.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Probably not perfect but very entertaining. The recreation of Live Aid and the stand–ins for the band members were impressive.
Winter's Bone (2010)
A very apt title and the performances are spot on. Like this review, there is no meat on the bone.
Counterpart (TV Series) (2017)
A very well written screenplay and it is good to see quality casting from both sides of the Atlantic working together. Olivia Williams, Stephen Rea and, a double dose of J.K. Simmons stand out.
Red, White and Brass (2023)
Hard to dislike.- DVD $29.95
Scrapper (2023)
Not great but there is a freshness to the material and it doesn't get soppy.- DVD $29.95
Red House, The (1947)
The screenplay builds slowly to a fine climax. Edward G is at the centre of things and his fine performance is aided by excellent use of light and shadow.
September (2007)
It doesn't make too much of an impression.
Art of Love, The (2011)
For its type it is good. The French can do romantic comedies in their sleep.
Angels in America (TV Mini Series) (2004)
The male turmoil is injected with some creative visionary sequences and 3 very good female performances and is all the better for it.- DVD
$24.95 $18.70
Heroes (TV Series) (2006)
S1: It is long. It becomes a series of party pieces after a while.
Holy Spider (2022)
Made for the right reasons but there is little depth to the screenplay and it is a bit simplistic at times.- DVD $29.95
Mr. Turner (2014)
Commendably it at times portrays Turner unflatteringly and typically the director's attention to detail is impressive. The cinematography at times is stunning.
Armstrong Lie, The (2013)
Who needs fiction?
Man from Earth, The (2007)
An interesting plot killed off by a lifeless lead which I guess is a bit ironic.
Zabriskie Point (1970)
There is cult value in the screenplay but the main attraction is the desert location shooting plus an interesting soundtrack.
Man for All Seasons, A (1966)
A superb cast and performances plus quality writing and production values make it a must see. The sparring between McKern and Scofield is worth it alone.- DVD
$19.95 $14.95
Prison Break - Season 1 (TV Series) (2005)
The screenplay to its credit has more emphasis away from the aggro normally associated with prison dramas.
Suburban Mayhem (2006)
Our young tearaway makes it watchable.
Party, The (2017)
An excellent mix of European and American performers do justice to a tight and biting script.- DVD $29.95
Puppy (2005)
Not great or very original but it does get better in the second half.
Oppenheimer (2023)
It was hard to maintain interest throughout but although not essential viewing it did have some good segments which may encourage further reading. The production values were good although the soundtrack did interfer.
Safety of Objects, The (2001)
The screenplay has the odd interesting segment but it doesn't achieve too much overall.
Million Dollar Arm (2014)
Based on a true story it has an interesting plot but the better bits in the screenplay become fewer as the drama progresses. Great music by A.R. Rahman.
No Hard Feelings (2023)
The light material was juvenile at times. Jennifer deserves much better.
Passengers of the Night, The (Les passagers de la nuit) (2021)
The first half and a bit was good with Charlotte being Charlotte but thereafter the screenplay became more cloying.- DVD $29.95
Plenty (1985)
An uneven screenplay and an out of place Meryl Streep but there are some good segments and a very good British supporting cast.
Commander in Chief (TV Series) (2005)
Once the freshness of the main idea wears off it becomes repetitive as each crisis needs to be faced. It was no different to watching the news. Unfortunately, Geena had a family which meant writing in unnecessary characters but she & Sutherland were good.
Asteroid City (2023)
Whilst the screenplay is hard work the artwork and set designs are very commendable.
Diary of Anne Frank, The (1959)
Considering location wise it is very limited it does well to generate some interest & even a little suspense but it does die at times particularly when the young couple are on screen plus the story's outcome is well known.- DVD
$19.95 $14.95
Antoinette in the Cevennes (2020)
The donkey segments and the locations were fine (as was the weather) but you can forget most of the rest.- DVD $29.95
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (Mission Impossible 7) (2023)
It does resemble an 007 adventure. The main ingredients are the same but I would give Mission Impossible the nod on the theme tune.
Murphy Brown (TV Series) (1988-1998)
S1: Although the laughter track works overtime the screenplay is not all that funny but the characters are likeable and it avoids soppiness.
It Should Happen to You (1954)
The material is very light but Judy makes it watchable plus there is some 50s New York location shooting to add interest.
DL Chronicles, The (TV Series) (2005)
The flow of the screenplay is disrupted every few minutes because of the character's need to touch lips but the series could have some cult value.
Last Action Hero (1993)
It entertainingly breaks the action movie mould but beware of the kid's voice.
3:10 to Yuma (1957)
With a low body count, not your traditional Western. Well written and performed. The stress on the local townsfolk when confronted by the bad guys was very convincing.
Take Me Out To The Ball Game (Everybody's Cheering) (1949)
Musically not very strong but there is Kelly's dancing to admire. The screenplay is padding.
Strait-Jacket (1964)
The screenplay had a sharp edge.
T2 Trainspotting (2017)
An uneven screenplay but Ewen Bremner's feel for comedy makes it worthwhile as does the soundtrack.
Happy Valley (TV Series) (2014-2023)
S1: The characters are believable and there is no room for flower pots. Sarah Lancashire is impressive.- DVD $24.95, $34.95, $79.95
Frankie (TV Series) (2013)
It is as good as a lot of other similar TV series. There is the odd comedic moment which helps.
Invisible Woman, The (2013)
The screenplay wasn't particularly interesting but it was well produced.
Death Defying Acts (2007)
It might be a romance but the screenplay would have been better without it. Saoirse Ronan is very good as are the period details.
Gold (The Great Gold Conspiracy) (1974)
Not memorable but a watchable screenplay with an interesting cast.
Halt and Catch Fire (TV Series) (2014-2017)
S1:It did not catch fire for me but it could find an audience.
Bringing Out the Dead (1999)
It is well written with some good off beat humour. The shooting locations are well chosen and add to the darkness.
Million Pound Note, The (1953)
Excellent satirical writing. A good supporting cast with the wonderful Joyce Grenfell stealing her scenes.
A Star Is Born (1976)
It didn't matter to Barbara that another version of the story was unnecessary. She did everything with gusto and she is the main reason for the film's raison d'être.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
The animation of the city particularly the streets was excellent.
Magnificent Ambersons, The (1942)
It never betters the opening scenes but the writing is pretty good throughout and the camera work is always interesting.
How About You? (2008)
A smashing female cast plus Joss.
Perfumes (2019)
Lightly entertaining, without being silly, and undemanding.- DVD $29.95
Masculin Feminin (1966)
It has some good segments and some great 60s location shooting but the main male character just doesn't seem to do anything with his life and is mainly a waste of space.
Once Upon a Scoundrel (1973)
It has a decent comedy plot and a comedic actor to pull it off.
Jack and the Beanstalk (2010)
It starts fine with the talents of Christopher Lloyd and Wallace Shawn but then this duck comes along with the grating voice.
Le Weekend (2013)
Not a particularly interesting screenplay but the two classy leads make it worth a try.
Big Night (1996)
Still watchable. mainly thanks to the casting, but not dating too well.
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949)
The screenplay holds no surprises but the location shooting is terrific.
Roof, The (Tetto, Il) (1956)
Solid working class drama with a big heart.
Heavens Above (1963)
A well written screenplay is well serviced by an excellent Peter Sellers and some of the cream of Britain's comedic actors.
HR Pufnstuf (TV Series) (1969)
Has cult value and should still attract a family audience.
Monsieur Lazhar (2011)
Solidly written with the melodrama kept to a minimum.
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The (2009)
It runs out of steam eventually and is too long but the two leads anchor things pretty well overall.
Drumline (2002)
The choreography was fine and made it worthwhile.
Paris, 13th District (Les Olympiades, Paris 13e) (2021)
Uninteresting characters that have nothing useful to do.- DVD $29.95
Peterloo (2018)
From kitchen sink to historical dramas the Director has great attention to detail.
Road Trip (2000)
It has the odd bits of genuine humour but it is down the backroads for the most part.
Just My Luck (2006)
The two leads are harmless as is the material.
In the Name of the Father (1993)
The screenplay admiringly does not get bogged down which is some achievement considering the legal system is heavily involved. A smashing cast and soundtrack.
Cat and the Canary, The (1939)
Not a strong comedy nor a strong horror but a decent mix of both.
Under the Volcano (1984)
One terrific performance.
Scum (1980)
The screenplay has one or two points to make, which it does well, thanks in no small way to no nonsense writing and performances.
Surfwise (2007)
Family reminiscences some of which are interesting.
Quiet, The (2005)
It could have been so much better with a scriptwriter.
Laverne & Shirley (TV Series) (1976)
S1: the comedy is not great but the pair work well together and the settings are working class.- DVD $24.95, $24.95, $24.95, $24.95
From Beyond (1986)
Great work by the special effects/makeup people. Enjoyable.
Striking Distance (1993)
The river locations provide some relief from the routine and the casting of Dennis Farina helps.
Bells of St. Mary's (1944)
These bells still ring loud for some but they have only a little a peal for others.
Nine Days (2020)
Not everything was fathomable on a first viewing but the material was fresh and therefore commendable.
Toni Erdmann (2016)
If there was ever a screenplay crying out for a shorter running time this was it. A good plot idea but one that lost freshness and its effectiveness the longer it went on.
Whale, The (2022)
There is little movement as the whale is beached.
Sweetie (1989)
For the most part Quirky.
In Darkness (2011)
It is okay, but without wanting to be disrespectful to those involved in the real events, it has been a busy film genre over the years.
Super Mario Bros. Movie, The (2023)
The characters are interesting and have been animated very well.
Mad Max III - Beyond Thunderdome (Mad Max 3) (1985)
The "crowd" scenes were well done as were the set designs and props.
Thirteen Ghosts (2001)
There was a lot of yelling between the characters so at least the screenplay made an impression on somebody.
Ride Clear of Diablo (1954)
Dan Duryea adds much needed character to the proceedings.
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966)
It plays like a play, it is heavy on dialogue and is quite long so it needs a bit of patience.
Delicious (2021)
You can understand why those in wigs were guillotined. Good production values.
100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, The (Hundred Year Old Man, the) (2013)
Well produced and entertaining but it got repetitive through being too long.
Sherpa (2015)
Talk about having a camera in the right place at the right time.
Why Don't You Play in Hell? (Jigoku de naze warui) (2013)
Relax, lay back, and let the blood flow over you.
On the Town (1949)
The dance troupe includes two of the best in Kelly and Miller and there is good comedic support from Betty Garrett et.al. The location shooting is the icing on the cake.
Wild One, The (1954)
Brando is more of a flower pot than a wild one but there is some interest in Lee Marvin still learning the ropes. The highlight is the beautiful black and white.
Twisted Nerve (1968)
The screenplay was never more than steadily paced but it does drag unnecessarily in the second half at times. Hywel Bennett is very good and there is an excellent supporting cast in Billie Whitelaw, Barry Foster, and Timothy West.
Martyrs (2008)
I fail to see the artistic merit in portraying the beating and torturing of a woman by a man.
Naked City, The (1948)
A decent policier with a memorable opening sequence. I never tire of looking at New York street scenes – the older the better.
Barbary Coast (1935)
It is at its best when Edward G, who is a bit too strong for this lot, is strutting his stuff.
Cinema Paradiso (1990)
The second half loses much of the energy and charm of the first but overall it is well worth a watch.
Tais Toi! (Ruby and Quentin) (2003)
The first hour is particularly strong before the screenplay weakens. Depardieu shows a flair for comedy but the casting department does a fine job all around.
City of God (Cidade de Deus) (2002)
A very good first half raced along but then it ran out of ideas and it repeated itself.
Two or Three Things I Know About Her (1965)
Different but not memorable.
Taxi Driver (1976)
Some great 70s street scenes particularly the early one showing the rubbish and the seedy building interiors were well selected. The stickup scene was handled refreshingly differently to the norm.- DVD
$24.95 $18.70
Ludwig (1972)
This synopsis of an interesting character could well encourage further reading. Excellent production values.
Bellissima (1951)
For much of the screenplay, it is full on and you need to take respite in the odd quiet moment.
My Old School (2022)
The screenplay was only mildly interesting but the animation helped.
Duke, The (2020)
A great story but you still needed to get the casting right.
Decision To Leave (2022)
Okay overall but it really slows done when the romance develops and even gets totally bogged down at times. Disappointing after a good start.- DVD $29.95 | Blu-Ray $34.95
I am a Camera (1955)
The screenplay is not particularly interesting. The casting of Harvey doesn't help.
Highway to Heaven (TV Series) (1984)
S1 Moralistic. - DVD
$59.95 $30, $49.95, $59.95, $59.95
It's a Wonderful Afterlife (2010)
Very likeable characters and screenplay supplemented by a very good soundtrack.- DVD $14.95
Way of Life, A (2004)
It handles the racism issue very effectively. All the characters and performances are believable.
Wah Do Dem (What They Do) (2009)
We didn't need the lead character. Without him, we could have got to the Congos quicker.
Seven Men From Now (1956)
A memorable opening scene followed by a solid screenplay. It has one of the better western directors/ leading men teaming up again, plus a very respected writer. Lee Marvin also gives a helping hand.
Operation Mincemeat (2021)
A strong story – I remember watching and being impressed by it from the version screened in "The Man Who Never Was" (1956).
4.3.2.1 (2010)
A great title but there is no lift off.
Official Competition (Competencia Oficial) (2021)
There were some worthwhile segments, with Banderas best of the trio, but overall a reduction in running time would have helped.
Creation (2009)
Whilst it may not satisfy all those seeking a science v religion punchup there is a better than average cast and good production values.
Our Man in Havana (1960)
Gives the spy people a well–deserved poke in the eye with Alec Guinness carrying the sharp stick. There is a terrific cast to abet him and the location shooting is impressive.
Nightmare Alley (1947)
An interesting but not always convincing screenplay and one that would have benefitted from being tighter.
Legend of 1900, The (1998)
Although the screenplay doesn't run smoothly at times, maybe because it is shorter than the original version, it is nevertheless an interesting story performed by an interesting cast.
Ambulance (2022)
Characters shouting into each other's faces – I know how they feel after watching this.
Vai (2019)
Producing this compilation of stories would have been a challenge. Beautiful viewing.
Babadook, The (2014)
The Babadook was okay it was the hyperactive kid that I had trouble with.
Where Is Anne Frank? (2022)
An interesting screenplay and although the narrative may have lost a little in its translation, I really enjoyed the animation.- DVD $29.95
Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie (2012)
Although some segments worked okay overall the material was not that strong. Some interesting support casting helped though.- DVD $29.95
An Idiot Abroad (TV Series) (2010)
It is well written and not sure how much ad–libbing Pilkington does but at the end of the day it doesn't really matter as it works. Pilkington is excellent.
Love Witch, The (2016)
An interesting try but it just gets bogged down after a while – maybe the re–enactments, which were okay in themselves, affected the flow. A good soundtrack and work by the makeup department helped.
Dead Snow (Død Snø) (2009)
Plenty of blood and black currant jam.- DVD $29.95
Hellzapoppin' (1941)
The screenplay is loosely structured and contains comedy and musical numbers of uneven quality but the whole is worth a look.
My Family (TV Series) (2000-2006)
The good standard of the script is consistent across all 8 episodes.
Coming Home in the Dark (2021)
Not too bad for its type, has some decent suspense at times, and could be worth a try.
Goal! (2005)
For the most part, it is good – the re–enactments are well handled and there is an interesting support cast – but the melodrama takes over. A more condensed screenplay would have left less room for the fairy stuff.
Secret, The (Si j'étais toi) (2007)
It does try to be a little different, but at the end of the day, not a great screenplay.
Julia (1977)
A well produced screenplay that goes up a notch when the vivacious Vanessa is on camera.
Sami Blood (2016)
Whilst the screenplay wasn't always that convincing its political message was loud and clear. A good performance from the young lead and the shooting locations helped.- DVD $29.95
Silent Partner, The (1978)
It is a pretty good story and the casting of Plummer, Gould, and York is hard to ignore.
Butterflies Are Free (1972)
The screenplay maintains its stage origins and is heavy on dialogue in a limited space.
Made In Romania (2010)
The casting was an interesting mix and helped to bolster interest in the uneven screenplay.
21 Hours at Munich (1976)
A reasonable re–enactment with Holden and Nero included no doubt to add lustre to the proceedings.
Oliver Twist (1948)
Robert Newton and Alec Guinness head an excellent cast of supporting performers. The set designs are superb.
Sex Traffic (Mini-Series) (2004)
The screenplay does a commendable job of portraying a part of the sex trade in a no frills manner. It was too long however as it got its strong message across very ably at what would have been the normal feature length.
Blood and Sand (1941)
I always cheer for the bull.
All the King's Men (1949)
A bullying performance from Crawford is the centre piece of this well written screenplay but Mercedes McCambridge's performance is just as worthy.- DVD
$24.95 $18.70
Hideous Kinky (1999)
The screenplay is loosely structured but this is not a problem thanks to the central performer, the locations, and the terrific smorgasbord soundtrack.
Yentl (1983)
A never ending screenplay with modest musical interruptions.
Friday (1995)
All the cast were good and the characters were generally well written and interesting.
Snake Pit, The (1948)
A bit dated but certainly still watchable thanks to the lead performance.
Meet John Doe (1941)
The screenplay contains one or two political messages and although it gets a bit too melodramatic toward the end it is helped along by very good casting in all the leading roles.
Blues Brothers 2000 (1998)
The screenplay is okay but it did need the musical segments and in particular the harmonica blues.
Fabelmans, The (2022)
Most scenes had someone or something yelling or screaming.
Fatal Instinct (1993)
Not an easy form of comedy but this one works very well.
Charro (1969)
I looked up the meaning of Charro (without the !). I now know more than I did before thanks to watching this.
Rio Lobo (1970)
An okay screenplay but it has been done before. Jack Elam provides the most interest.
Dead Like Me: Life After Death (2009)
Hadn't seen or even heard of the series so I came into this feature presentation cold. After viewing it my temperature hadn't changed much.
Robin-B-Hood (Bo bui gai wak) (2006)
Although the stunt and action scenes are of the expected Jackie standard the screenplay is far too long for the material.
Shadows in the Sun (The Shadow Dancer) (2005)
More of a hangover than a shadow.
Devil's Playground, The (1976)
The wonderful title sums up the screenplay perfectly.
God Bless America (2011)
For the most part, it was well written but it eventually backed itself into a corner and finished weakly.
Pin Up Girl (1944)
Musically modest but there are two good dance numbers from the Condos Brothers.
Nope (2022)
Visually interesting and visually impressive.
Talk of the Town, The (1942)
The comedy only flares now and again but Jean Arthur at least tries hard to keep the flame alive in this not too convincing screenplay.
Greta (According to Greta) (2009)
Ellen Burstyn is clearly the best thing in this and makes it worth a try.
Fifty Shades Freed (2017)
We are finally freed.
Kiss Me Kate (1953)
The dance numbers throughout are excellent and not just by the quality operators Ann Miller and Tommy Rall. The Cole Porter songs are the icing on the Kate.
Comfort of Strangers, The (1991)
More dialogue than action but it is Pinter's. Walken's smile can be chilling.
Spread (2009)
I think it might have been made during one of the writer's strikes.
Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris (2022)
Well made and works thanks to Lesley Manville. The great Isabelle Huppert is wasted.
Speedway Junky (1999)
An uneven screenplay but it does have some good segments even if they are not particularly original. It climaxes but then drags out for another few scenes which doesn't help. The performances are okay but some of the strutting young males are annoying.
Cocaine Bear (2023)
Although the screenplay weakens a little, overall it is a comedy horror that works. The bear activity is cleverly done.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody) (2022)
It follows formula for this kind of thing.
Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The (1948)
Nothing spectacular but a very solid screenplay, performances, and believable characters.
Real Women Have Curves (2003)
Some good social commentary interspersed with daughter vs. mum (Lupe Ontiveros is terrific) all done for the most part without bitterness.
Captain, The (Der Hauptmann) (2017)
Fiction or non–fiction, it is a very good piece of satirical writing.
Faintheart (2008)
Interesting characters and ones that have been correctly cast. Nothing wrong with the screenplay and script either. And it is British.
Babylon (2022)
Although it is too long its production values and a driving soundtrack help to maintain some interest. Some excellent ensemble dance numbers are the highlight. Margot Robbie tries really hard and cannot be faulted for lack of effort.
Play Misty for Me (1971)
Although the screenplay runs out of steam, for the most part, the plot idea is believable and there are some very good 70s scenes.
Yves Saint Laurent (2014)
The production was well mounted as were most of the characters.
High Society (1956)
Not a great screenplay and the musical side would have been better if they had have left the singing to Bing.
Muru (2022)
It was okay as an actioner, well photographed, and it had a pretty good soundtrack.
Somewhere (2010)
The boredom aspect, particularly pre–Ellie, was handled very well. I also got the impression that the Director/Writer was making a comment on how we pamper film stars. even scruffy ones.
Masked and Anonymous (2003)
A bit of an odd screenplay in between the musical segments supported by a number of cameos some longer than others.
Age of Innocence, The (1993)
Excellent cast and settings but the characters are a waste of space in not doing anything useful with their lives.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022)
It includes some attractive design and artwork and the dramatisation is interesting enough to encourage further research.
Go! (Go Karts) (2020)
A screenplay that has been doing the rounds for a while but there is some attraction in the casting of Frances O’Connor.
Man Called Otto, A (2022)
A popular offering.
My Salinger Year (2021)
Margaret Qualley was okay but it is Sigourney who lifts a light screenplay up a notch or two.- DVD $29.95
Rams (2020)
This is a reminder of how much we miss John Clarke.
Life with Father (1947)
Its play origins are very apparent but the quality of the dialogue comes through aided by two lead performances who work well off each other.
Navigator, The (A Medieval Odyssey) (1988)
An uneven screenplay but it does include some great scenes and overall the material is fresh.
Delinquents, The (1957)
It is worth a try – take a look back at a time capsule.
Dirty Carnival, A (Biyeolhan geori) (2006)
More of the same but worthy of a watch if you don't mind more of the same.
Dark Waters (2019)
It was okay but why not leave it to the documentary maker(?)
Man Who Sued God, The (2001)
A good and fresh plot idea played out by as expected a terrific Judy Davis and a couldn't be boring Billy Connolly.
Levelling, The (2016)
Ellie Kendrick and her Dad (David Troughton) are excellent and what is more, believable. A screenplay with a no frills political message.
Western Union (1941)
It has a good plot, casting, and director but it doesn't really amount to much.- DVD $29.95
Warm Springs (2005)
It is not a warm and fuzzy drama about FDR – he couldn't have been easy to live with – and it is all the better for it. The production values are first class and the casting of leads and supports are well done and interesting.
Teknolust (2002)
It contains more than one good performance from Tilda with Karen Black the icing on the cake. The screenplay is intelligent and refreshingly different. The wardrobe/hair and the design people deserve special mention as well.
Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (TV Series) (2011)
The screenplay is divided into 6 interchangeable episodes.
Maps to the Stars (2014)
Mia more than holds her own against in form Julianne and Olivia – the three of them are excellent. An interesting screenplay that doesn't follow the norm.
New Jack City (1991)
It opens with a great aerial shot of the city but it is downhill after that. Neither the characters nor the screenplay offer enough originality to maintain one's interest.
Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)
More of the same.
Love Me Tonight (1932)
It opens with a great aerial shot over the chimney pots. Jeanette MacDonald's lovely voice carries the musical side and certainly does justice to some memorable numbers. A good supporting cast helps with the padding in between.
Sing 2 (2020)
Animation is able to create at will such a wide variety of creatures.
Guncrazy (1992)
Not the first time this plot idea has been used but the young veteran Barrymore creates some interest.
Jackass Number Two (2006)
More of the same as is the rating.
Taste of Cherry, A (1997)
An intelligent rather than an entertaining screenplay. Not the Director's best but worth a look.
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
The location shots during the opening credits are memorable & are backed up later by some excellent street scenes. The camera work & the set designs set a suitable mood for the screenplay with an ensemble of veteran character actors the icing on the cake.
Emily (2022)
Solid and competent.- DVD $29.95
Reprise (2006)
The screenplay was fragmented when it switched the focus to one of the fringe characters who were then returned to the shadows. However, for the most part, proceedings were shared by 3 good performers – with the first half being stronger than the second.
Buchanan Rides Alone (1958)
Another solid western from the pairing of Boetticher and Scott.
Ticket To Paradise (2022)
Not only Roberts and Clooney but Clooney and Roberts do these things in their sleep.
Return From Witch Mountain (1978)
A decent enough for all ages screenplay with the added attraction of the established talents of Davis and Lee.
For Your Consideration (2006)
Like black comedy, spoofs could be very easy to stuff up – this one works quite well, however.
Motel Hell (1980)
A black comedy that works – maybe because no one seems to be taking things too seriously. Check in and enjoy it.
One More Night (The Lather Effect) (2006)
One good thing about not being able to remember the 80s is characters like these.
